The Old Van, pt. 2

whatever lawyers are good for, it's not driving trucks.

So the transformation was complete. The Old Van was now the Van Thing, ready to be delivered to its home in the country, and to live out its life in peace and quiet.

But, how to get it there? No one wanted to take it on a 3 hour trip. The open back was too exposed for highway travel. And it may not have been street legal any more.

The owner who had been the downtown, suit-wearing lawyer thought he could load the Van Thing onto a rented trailer, and have a great time driving it to the LL Ranch.

So he rented a trailer, and loaded it up.

He drove the thing home, never going over 35, and all seemed well. Great plans were made for the trip.

The next morning, he was off. All went well until he entered the freeway, and got the van up to about 55 mph.

It was then that the inherent instability of the trailer with the Van Thing on it made itself known. The trailer fishtailed wildly, swinging from side to side like a pendulum.

Luckily the former downtown, suit-wearing lawyer didn't slam on his brakes, as that would have sent the entire contraption into a spin. As he slowed down a little, the trailer swung hard right and slammed to freeway side wall.

That stopped the swinging.

But the Van Thing kept going when the trailer hit. And guess what? Not only was the former downtown suit-wearing lawyer a bad driver, but he didn't know how to properly secure a tail heavy, unstable load on a too-short trailer. The straps held, but the Van Thing almost came off.

All ended well. No one was hurt, and the Van Thing eventually made it to its happy home with the help of professional movers, where it lives today.

But the moral of the story is, don't hire a lawyer to drive a van.
